Learning General English
Our Approach
We take a client-centred approach to teaching the English language, which means that we teach what the client wants to learn. We also carefully assess language needs and incorporate those into an individualized program of ESL learning. Language, including grammar, is presented in authentic texts as seen in everyday life. Our clients have the opportunity to develop and use their reading, speaking, listening, and writing skills in English in meaningful ways.
We offer the following levels in general English.
Literacy in English
Clients will learn basic language skills needed for day-to-day adult situations. The focus will be on learning the alphabet, numbers, object identification, and survival English phrases. At this level listening and speaking tasks are emphasized..
Beginner Levels
Clients will develop greater skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing for basic communication in the real world. The following are the specific tasks to be learned in the 4 skill areas with the understanding that speaking is integral to all:
Speaking
basic requests and responses
telephone skills
simple casual conversations
Writing
form-filling
simple sentences and questions
Reading
signs, menus and other simple texts seen in everyday life
Listening
announcements, telephone conversations, and brief news extracts
Intermediate Level English
At lower levels, clients will refine skills needed in conversations beyond survival needs so that they can function independently in most daily situations and use appropriate language in most social situations. They will have continued exposure to authentic written and spoken texts at more challenging levels.
At higher intermediate levels clients will learn the English skills needed to function effectively in social and work situations. They will also learn to discuss and interpret cultural differences and use English to solve problems in daily life.
Advanced English Instruction
At the advanced levels clients will have sufficient knowledge of written and spoken English to communicate at near native levels. They will have the necessary language skills needed to pass the TOEFL, IELTS, CLB and other college or university tests.
